Rehoming a Dog
If you are no longer able to care for a dog that was adopted from BARK, please contact the adoption team at to facilitate returning the dog to BARK. As a reminder, BARK's adoption contract requires that you return an adopted dog to BARK if at any point you are no longer able to care for him or her. You will need to complete an owner surrender form, which will be emailed to you, and bring copies of his or her veterinary records (including the original BARK records) with you when you return your adopted BARK dog.
If you are in need of assistance with rehoming a dog that was not adopted from BARK, we are able to offer a "courtesy" posting on our website and Petfinder page. To courtesy list a dog, please send a request with the following information to :
- Description of the dog including age, sex, breed mix, size, behavior with other dogs/cats/kids, if the dog is spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations, and on regular monthly heartworm preventative;
- Up to 3 pictures of the dog; and
- Preferred method for interested parties to contact you (e.g., email address, phone number).
If you have found a stray dog, please contact your local animal control. Virginia law requires that found dog reports be filed and a mandatory stray hold be satisfied before a stray dog may be rehomed, either privately or through a rescue.
