Correctional Companions Update

The current group of Correctional Companions is scheduled to return to BARK in early August. To make that happen, we need two volunteers to drive the van to Botetourt Correctional Facility (near Roanoke, VA) to transport them home, and to deliver the new group to the prison. If you are interested, please email amy@barkva.org.

In happy adoption news, long-time resident and Correctional Companion Rita has been adopted! Yay Rita!

And here’s a Happy Tail from the family of former Correctional Companion Molly:

I'm finally getting around to e-mailing some pictures of Molly. We just love having her at home with us and we can't be happier that she's OURS. I think she's very happy to be with us.

I have found out that she's scared of storms. When the two thunderstorms came through this week, she was glued to me. I was trying to reassure her when I noticed that she was shaking. Poor baby. I can only imagine the storms she had to wait through when she was at the farm.

One of the pictures was taken after we went on a hike while camping. She was tuckered out but had so much fun. Another was taken one night when she climbed up on the couch next to me and was wiggling on her back wanting some belly rubbing. The others are just fun ones I thought you'd enjoy.

News from the Farm

We have had several capital improvements at the farm recently:

The intake area is almost complete-the structure is up and the concrete floor has been poured.

The main kennel has a new metal roof and white paint on the back section of the roof to keep our guys and gals cooler.

Volunteer Tim D’Angelo built a wonderful new bridge on the Eagle Trail. The long trail is being used by many more volunteers now.

Volunteer Steve Phillips installed new fans in the puppy area and in the rear porch area.

Helping the Community: BARK Adoptions for June 2009

Most BARK dogs are rescued from local public shelters. These shelters are open admission facilities, meaning that they are required by law to accept all unwanted dogs, such as those picked up as strays or surrendered by owners.

When public shelters run out of room to house the dogs, they sometimes euthanize as a means of population control. BARK and other rescues offer lifesaving alternatives by transferring at risk dogs to their facilities, where they are housed until adoptive homes are found. In addition to finding forever homes, BARK vaccinates, spays/neuters each dog and provides appropriate veterinary care. We are proud to report that 59 BARK dogs found loving homes last month.

Special Request: We need standard 2-pocket folders without brackets to use for adoption materials we give to new adopters. If you would like to donate folders, please bring them to the Short Pump adoption outing or email terri@barkva.org .

Adoption Spotlight: Dottie & Rocky

Dottie is a beautiful 3-4 year old Retriever/Pointer mix. She thrives on affection and attention and loves belly rubs and back scratches but is not a needy dog. She is housebroken and quiet, not much of a barker at all. Dottie likes other dogs but can be bossy. She would probably do well as an only dog because she enjoys being the center of attention. Dottie is ready now and doesn’t want to wait much longer. She’s looking forward to being the apple of your eye! Spoil her rotten with a nice soft bed and snacks (she loves them) and some good ol’ lovin’. Come meet pretty Dottie today. Contact terri@barkva.org or 804-449-BARK (2275).

Rocky is a hunk of burning love! A charmer with the ladies, Rocky wants nothing more than to get affection in return for giving adoring attention to people and those girlie dogs he rooms with. He loves treats and walks (he is strong on leash) and play time. Rocky is 3-4 years young, and is full grown at about 75 pounds. With his beautiful golden eyes and brindle coloring, he appears to be a Chesapeake Bay retriever mixed maybe with shepherd and who knows what. This big guy has not lived with other males so he would need to meet your male dog to see how they get along. We think he would be an excellent companion for a single person or couple as he thrives on attention and would love to go places and do things. Though he looks intimidating, he is a big ol’ TEDDY BEAR who loves to hug and smooch. Rocky is loyal and affectionate, and he will thrive in a home that gives him lots of exercise, interaction, and training. He would make a great exercise or running buddy but we can picture him chilling out to a good episode of Animal Planet and sharing popcorn with his special person or family after a long day of play. Rocky has waited patiently for a home. If you would like to give him the chance he so deserves, please send an email to terri@barkva.org or call 804-449-BARK (2275).

Volunteer Corner:

Stories wanted!

Since BARK has so many dogs, it is difficult for volunteers to get to know each of them in the limited time they share at the farm or at an adoption stand. In an effort to showcase our dogs and generate more interest, we are asking all volunteers: pick your favorite dog and write to us, tell us why that dog is your favorite and what makes him/her so special. What does “your” dog do that makes him so endearing? How does she act? These stories will help readers get to know the dogs and hopefully generate adoption interest. Plus, they’re a lot of fun to read!

We need farm caretakers AND more!!!!

In addition to our ongoing need for cleaners and runners at the kennel seven days a week, WE  ESPECIALLY  NEED CARETAKERS FOR OUR KIDS  on Mondays and Wednesdays from July 21st until sometime in October!!!!!!!  Linda, our diehard kennel coordinator, will be out for surgery and wants to be certain that the kids, the kennel, and the cleaning chores will be maintained without skipping a beat. Then she'll be back!!

High school students, college kids and parents, families... please come to the farm to help keep the dogs healthy, happy and clean while they await their forever homes.  Their love, hugs, and kisses of appreciation make it all worth while. It is fun working in teams so bring a friend.  It would be great if each cleaner had a runner to help. Here are working times and contact information for each day's crew leads. You may come at other times if you are experienced and have been through an orientation, but preferably not alone.  Just make sure you mark the number of the row(s) you clean as well as the kennel numbers for the dogs you walk on the two separate boards,.  That way others will know what still needs to be done on that day.

If you have completed a waiver, an application, and an orientation, feel free to stop by the kennel anytime to straighten up. We need help keeping the shelter neat and orderly : sweeping over and under EVERYTHING, cleaning shelves, filling diluted bleach bottles and putting things in their proper place. Many Thanks!!

Doggone Good News

The Dog Days of Summer are here! Enjoy and stay safe!

From the ASPCA:

·      Keep your pet on the wagon. Since alcohol is potentially poisonous to pets, place all wine, beer and spirits well out of paws’ way.

·      Avoid scraps from the grill. Stick with your pet’s normal diet—any change, even for a day, can result in stomach upset. Certain foods like onions, avocado, chocolate, grapes and raisins are especially toxic to pets.

·      Avoid lathering your pet with any insect repellent or sunscreen not intended for the four-legged kind. Ingestion can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy.

·      Stay fire-smart. Keep your pet away from fireworks, matches, citronella candles and lighter fluid, which if eaten can irritate the stomach, lungs and central nervous system.

·      Be cool near the pool. Don’t leave pets unsupervised around a pool or lake—not all dogs are expert swimmers! Be sure that there is a way that your pet can climb out of the pool. Also, pools aren’t large water bowls—they contain chlorine and other toxic chemicals that can cause stomach problems.

We’d like to add that you should be aware of the hot pavement—your dog’s paw pads can burn or become tender if too much time is spent on the pavement in the heat. So, when you take your dog to festivals this summer, be cautious about the pavement and keep plenty of water on hand! And never leave your best bud in a hot car!!!

Protect your dog from sunburn! They do get burned, especially light haired dogs or dogs who have been shaved.

Happy Tails.....Waggin’ Good News!

I adopted Sly (now Fergus) in October of 2007. A year and a half later, we're still having a wonderful time together! He’s just the best dog I could ever imagine having, sweet, loving, and lots of fun.

When Sly first came home, he was frightened - it was heartbreaking to see him panic at every new experience. He is still a cautious dog and easily overwhelmed, but has become confident enough that we can go for long, wonderful walks and come home for delightful snuggles!

Thank you so much for rescuing this wonderful dog! I would hate to think of life without him!

All the best,

Nichole

Fergus

My new mommy is writing to give you an update on me and my new home. I love my new home! I have an endless supply of rawhides to chew on, regular snacks, two square meals a day, and a nice selection of beds throughout the house; my favorite though is my nighttime bed located in the bedroom that my brother Max and I share along with mommy and daddy’s computers. Sometimes though, I like to sneak up on the futon with my brother at night. I also like have a big brother to play with, we just go and go and go until one of us gets tired; mommy and daddy say that we are two peas in a pod, what one doesn’t think of the other does. I am good for Max too; he has lost weight since I came to live with him.

I am a very lucky boy! My new doctor, who specializes in skin issues, says that if mommy and daddy had not adopted me when they did there is a good chance that I would be at the rainbow bridge. I had a skin infection and two types of mange along with the allergies and intestinal parasites but all of that is clearing up nicely; I feel so much better now! I don’t have the itches anymore and have sprouted a nice coat in the past few weeks; you can hardly tell where my boo-boo’s were. Oh, and I almost forgot, I have gained 6.6 pounds since I have come to my new home; I am at the perfect weight now.

Once again, I am a very lucky boy! My new mommy and daddy, and my brother Max, love me very much. I especially like it when we all go for a ride in the car together; a few weeks ago I had a problem with that though, I thought that maybe mommy or daddy were taking me away and I was never coming back, that is very scary for a little guy like me with all that I have been through. I also like when we go for walks in the neighborhood near my new home, I get to see lots of other dogs and stop by to visit at a house that has two HUGE Great Dane’s; I really look tiny next to them! I like it too when my grand pap comes to visit every Sunday, he calls me Mugsy. And I have a two year old “uncle”, Grady, that comes to visit, he likes to play with Max and me.

Thank you so much volunteers at BARK for rescuing me and finding me my forever home!

Now, my mommy has some things she would like to tell you…

Farfel is such a joy and well worth every penny we spend on him to bring him back to health. He has a wonderful personality and is a good boy -- a perfect match for Max. We are so happy that we found his listing on PetFinder. I often said that Ramius, who was 14 ½, was around as long as he was for a reason; he was waiting for the perfect replacement for him which we have found in Farfel. We used to call Ramius Meathead; we now call Farfel Mini Meathead. With the loss of two dogs within the past year, our two former boys found us perfect replacements for them in Max and Farfel.

Thanks again for all that you and the BARK organization have done for Farfel because, without you we would not have this wonderful little boy.

Lynne

Hi, we were all watching a movie in bed so I snapped a few pictures of my girl. We are happy and doing well; Tootsie has another grooming appointment tomorrow and she loves it!

Thank you again, she is so happy and comfortable in our home and everyone loves her!

Shanks is settling in great! He is already house trained and adjusting very well. I have attached a picture of him for you.

Thanks,

Angela

Calypso is great! We love having her as part of our family.. She is settling in well and every time we take her out everyone tells us how much they love her. She is obedient and definitely knows who her mommy and daddy are. We took her to visit her doggie cousin (Yorkshire Terrier) a few weeks ago and it was like watching two little kids play, she was so playful and cute. Thank you again for bringing her to PetSmart the day I met her, I can't imagine not having her in our lives.

Thank you!

Kelli and Will

Puggy (now Gomez) is fitting in just fine! The cat is handling it better than expected. Gomez just lets Scarlett do whatever she likes and doesn't chase her. He’s great inside and the roomies like him. He’s pretty smart, already knows his name and is improving on the leash. Gomez really likes the dog park... we weren't sure if he was ready for it but when we walked by the park he really wanted to go in.

Anyway, just wanted you to know that we really like him. The picture is of Gomez and Scarlett on Day three. I feel they are on the way to becoming best friends.

We adopted Lucy a year ago from BARK. She’s been a wonderful addition to our family. Lucy is a sweet girl and loves to give everyone kisses… our cats have finally come to the realization that Lucy isn't going anywhere and she isn't going to leave them completely alone either! Lucy loves to play with the other dogs in the neighborhood and is a bus stop favorite with all of the kids in the mornings and afternoons. When we take her for walks, she holds her head and tail high and prances down the street like she's in a parade. She loves to go for car rides and immediately runs for the passenger door if you walk out of the house with shoes on and keys in hand. She loves to go for a swim whenever she can and she loves a cup of ice from Sonic as a special treat! We can't remember what our life was like before we adopted her! Thanks for everything you do…especially for rescuing Lucy!

Helen is doing really well. She seems very comfortable with her kennel, knows where it is; eats well and spends time outside each day with our other Walker Hound, Patches (who was Dodger when with you as a puppy). Patches is quite attached to Helen. He let her take over his two favorite spots, one under our magnolia tree and the other, a hole in the dirt under our deck. Patches has taken other spots close by. He waits for her to come out with him first thing in the morning and will go get her if he thinks she is coming in too slow. He does not come in without her coming first. She is a very sweet, good dog. She’s getting a Busy Bone each night and she is also taking a supplement for her joints which she really seems to like as the vet was concerned she may be a bit arthritic. Helen seems very content and secure in her new environment

Everything happens for a reason, embrace the possibilities!

We began fostering Luigi (now Winston) in November after losing our basset hound. Winston is now totally integrated into the family and is a hoot. He loves to play with our rottie Maddie - often running full speed across the room and rolling her over. Maddie loves him too. He recently completed obedience class and was the teacher's pet because he picked things up so quickly that he made the perfect example dog to teach a new technique. Here's a picture of our BARK buddy "Winnie" and his best friend, Maddie (they look a bit like sisters and brothers, just on a totally different scale).

Hello. my name is Hunter, which is short for Baron von Huntington (aka Baron at BARK). I am a black and white pointer mix. I was adopted by my Mom when I was about 6 months old and brought to my forever home near the Chesapeake Bay. Little did my new Mom know that I would be such a fun dog.

When adopted, I had a skin allergy which made me itch and made my belly turn pink. Mom took me to my primary vet who gave me shots, medicines, and even changed my monthly flea treatment, but it didn’t help. My secondary vet, who is my Mom's sister, changed my diet three times, and discovered that I have a a food allergy. Now no more pink belly! My two vets say that I am a sweet boy and am growing into a handsome dog.

I am such a lucky, lucky dog!!!! I have a 3-acre fenced yard to play with my sister Kitty in a lovely waterfront subdivision governed by leash law. I really enjoy walking to the docks and swimming with Mom. I also ride the kayak with Mom, but she gets upset when I try to "point" at the Osprey nests. This tends to tip over the kayak. I also run beside Mom when she goes biking and she carries a special water bottle just for me! All the neighbors ride their bikes and speak to me when passing my big yard.

I really enjoy going to the local Farmer's Market where I get to play with other dogs and their owners. All the children have come to know me well and now call me the "Polka Dot Dog". My spots have doubled in number since I was adopted! I also enjoy going back to visit the volunteers with BARK when the dogs come to play on Saturdays at PetSmart. I have asked Mom for a brother or sister dog to play with and she has promised to consider it.

My Mom lets me sleep in her room in my own special bed with my own stuffed squirrel. This way I can keep an eye on her and make sure she is safe. Mom volunteers and donates to different pet organizations and sometimes I even get to go to some of the fundraisers. Mom also works for a company who produces an ingredient in almost all pet foods in the world. When I get to go to work with Mom, everyone gives me very special love and goodies!

Thank you BARK for my forever home!

Princess has been part of our pack for about eight months now, and she is great! Princess and Marty were instant pals and he lets her help keep the backyard free of squirrels, birds, and delivery people. She loves long walks and riding in the car, especially if the destination is the dog park. Princess has a pink sparkly collar to match her name, but she is really more of a tomboy who likes to roll in smelly things and chew huge pieces of rawhide. Princess is still very shy with people, but she has made a lot of progress and I think she'll keep warming up to the world. Thanks for helping me find such a great friend!

Princess is on the left with the white face.

Thanks! Elaine

I wanted to send you a couple updated pictures of Tucker. He is getting bigger and bigger each day! Tucker has been a great addition to our family.

Chipper (we just call him Chip, Bubbles, or now Hollywood) was featured on the Picture Your Pet on Channel 12!! I sent this picture of him playing in the sprinkler. He makes us laugh all the time! Chip loves life and finds the fun in everything (except for his furry sister, Rocket, who thinks he is just an annoying little brother!) He loves diving for rocks in his baby pool, chasing squirrels, going for walks/ adventures, trying to climb trees (yes, it's true as there are squirrels up there!) and can snuggle anytime!

Thank you so much for bringing him into our lives. He is quite the "little buddy"!

Pete has been the most wonderful addition to my life! I live with my sister, Jennifer, and we immediately welcomed little Pete into our family the second we met him! It really was love at first sight. He was very timid and shy at first but became quickly attached to the both of us and comfortable within our presence. According to reports, Pete most likely had an abusive past before his rescue, as he was consistently fearful of males. As heartbreaking as this was to hear, I still felt a strong need to adopt him and give him the life that he deserved to live. After talking with the great folks at BARK, as well as Pete’s wonderful foster mom, everyone agreed that it would take patience and perseverance for Pete to learn to love and trust people in general, specifically males, but that it would be well worth the effort. It has been just over a month since I adopted Pete, and I am happy to say that he now is comfortable within the presence of familiar males, particularly my boyfriend, my sister’s boyfriend, and our father. My boyfriend, Jon, has been patient and loving with Pete, and I know his hard work has helped to earn Pete’s trust! I could not have asked for a better canine companion.

Pete brings so much joy and love into my life, and I cannot thank the folks at BARK enough for rescuing him and giving him the opportunity he deserves for a fun, safe, and happy life!

Paisley is doing well. She is an amazing, sweet dog. Loves life on the farm. Slowly adjusting to people who care for her; she is, however, coming out of her shell nicely. She cowers when you bend over to pet her, so you have to wait 'til she sits back up before petting her. But it gets better every day. Our reticence at correcting her even verbally (that’s all we do anyway) leads to her being at home in my easy chair. See pic. So... we love her, Cricket, her step-sister, loves her, even the horses ignore her. That's a good thing. So thanks very much.

Regards;

Debbie and Curtis Michael Bader, Cricket, Paisley; Watson, Murphy (cats); Oreo, Chicken, Arizona and Rusty (horses).

We renamed Tay Tay Maizie and she is doing so well. We love her very much. It's been so fun to watch her personality emerge. She is such a great combination of funny, sweet, crazy and cute. Thanks for taking such good care of her until we could find her!

Best,

Cindy

Tootsie (we call her Grace) is settling in wonderfully! She is the perfect addition to our family. We absolutely adore her and she is well loved. She goes with us everywhere and seems to love being with us. Grace loves to sit out in the backyard and watch the birds and the squirrels taunt her from the trees. This weekend she will travel with us to Matthews County. It's a wonderful place with lots of trees to sniff and bunnies to chase!

Thanks for asking!

Andrea

Bridget is settling in. She has a middle name – Abigail, so she is Bridget Abigail Durst B.A.D. ~ Bad to the Bone!

She’s a little shy around men and was terrified of my umbrella one day when I went out in the rain. We are showing her lots of love!

Bridget sleeps between me and my husband, up at our pillows. Our other rescue dog – Remington, (she is bigger-about 30 pounds and about 9 months, long and lean) sleeps in between our feet. They play, wrestle, kiss each other, and snuggle! We picked up “Remy” from “Happy Pets” about 3 weeks before we got Bridget and they hit it off right away. Bridget usually snuggles in Jame’s lap when we watch TV. She is a kisser (one of her nicknames). They are R & B ~ Rhythm & Blues!

It's me, Sandra Dee... but my new mom and dad have named me Molly. Thank you so much for checking on me! I’m getting settled in very well in my new home. I have a huge field to run around in with my mom and dad and I love all of the other neighborhood friends, both furry and not.

My new mom and dad have already taught me to shake hands, give high fives (with both paws) and I love playing ball and Frisbee in the yard. I’m walking well on leash and have excellent manners. I’m also looking forward to my first of many family vacations to the beach next month!!

Lastly, I just want to thank you and all of my other BARK family and friends for rescuing me and taking such good care of me. Thank you for helping me on my journey to finding my forever family. You all, and the BARK organization, are truly special, and truly needed.

Pongo is amazing! We actually changed his name to Geno :) He is probably the smartest puppy that I have ever dealt with...potty training has been a cinch! We love him so much and he definitely has both of us wrapped around his little paws! Thank you so much for giving this little guy to us to take care of and be a part of this family.

Lindee :)

Lil Debbie (I've re-named her Molly) is settling in wonderfully. I've been doing some training with her so she now walks nicely on her leash (most of the time), knows all her commands and is turning into quite a little lady. Her yeast infection is now fully gone and her fur is starting to grow back in nicely, and the problem she had with attacking her back legs is gone (she had a little bit of arthritis forming and supplements have helped take away the pain). Everyone at my Vet's office is just in love with her too!!

I can't thank you all enough for bringing her into my life.

Sincerely,

Wendy

Jethro is settling into our family nicely. We’ve had a few problems with him getting into the trash and marking his territory in the house, but we’re working with him. Jethro loves having access to the backyard via the doggy door. He will dig a cool dirt pile to sleep in during the afternoon. He has become fast friends with our Pug and Boston Terrier.

Thanks

Tia and I are doing great! She has settled in very well. Her and our other dog, Duncan, love to play together. Our other family have met her and absolutely love her. We could not be happier. I have attached a few photos as you requested.

Thanks,
